The
Western Pacific Railroad Museum facility is located on the former Western
Pacific Railroad Portola locomotive servicing facility located in
Portola, California. The 37 acre site includes a 220 foot long,
16,000 square foot diesel shop that was used from 1954 until 1974
as well as two and a half miles of trackage primarily consisting
of a balloon track and various yard tracks. The property is leased
by the Union Pacific Railroad
to the Feather River Rail Society and is right next to Union Pacific's
high density Feather River Subdivision main line in beautiful and
scenic Plumas County, California.
The
museum has over 30 locomotives and 80 cars of various ancestory
and unlike many other museums, visitors to the Western Pacific Railroad
Museum soon discover that this is a hands-on facility and are encouraged
to climb up in the cabs of locomotives, to sit in the engineer's
seats, and to browse through the many cabooses and passenger cars
that are on display. The museum also maintains a gift shop located
within the diesel shop as well as a snack bar which is open weekends
during the summer months.
